Homemade Mashed Potatoes

There’s nothing better than some good ‘ol homemade mashed potatoes!  This is a recipe for traditional, homemade mashed potatoes and they turn out perfect every time!

Homemade Mashed Potatoes


  • 6 Medium Russet Potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 Cup warm Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Butter or Margerine
  • 3/4 Teaspoon Salt
  • Dash Pepper


Place potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water. Cover and bring to a boil; cook for 20-25 minutes or until very tender. Drain well. Add milk, butter, salt and pepper; mash until light and fluffy.

For me making mashed potatoes took on a new dimension when I bought a potato ricer. I got it specifically for making gnocchi but immediately saw the added benefit of making amazing mashed potatoes too.

You have to try evaporated milk in your mashed potatoes. Talk about wonderful. I use an electric hand mixer and whip the boiled potatoes, salt, pepper, butter (I prefer Shedd's Spread) and enough evaporated milk to make the correct consistency. They're hard to beat.
