This is another recipe from the ‘Tis the Season class I attended. I’ve always loved hot apple cider. I’m not a huge ‘hot drink’ lover because I always tend to burn my tongue and then I can’t taste anything for the next 2 weeks! But, hot apple cider and hot chocolate are the two exceptions to that. This is a GREAT drink and I love the red hots in it! My friend had a pot fixed for us in her class and I had to get two cups it was so good! Perfect for those cold Christmas-y nights!
Red Hot Apple Cider
Printable Version: Red Hot Apple Cider
Ingredients
1 Gallon Apple Cider
1 1/4 Cup Ferrara Pan Red Hots (my friend swears by this brand – she said not to use any other kind….and you can find them at the dollar store!)
4-5 Medium Cinnamon Sticks
Directions
On stove top, simmer apple cider with cinnamon sticks for approximately an hour. Add the red hots, stir until dissolved, remove cinnamon sticks, serve. For extra spice, serve with extra red hots.
A slow cooker would work will with this recipe. Bring it to a boil, turn down and allow it to simmer for a few hours. This method will be slower in dissolving the red hots.
You can also use a commercial coffee maker (just make sure it has never brewed coffee before or it will alter the taste)

You can also do this in a percolating coffee pot (has to be the "perk" kind…do they even make those any more? LOL) Put the red hots in the coffee basket, cider in the pot, plug it in and when it finishes perking – red hots are melted. Perfect!
We have it every year at Christmas breakfast.
Is this actually red in color? I want to serve a red colored warm drink.
This drink is not a real red color….you could try adding red food coloring to it to make it the shade of red you are wanting though!
