Well, this might seem "too simple", but, I only just started doing it and it makes a huge difference in time and money spent! I sit down (with a calendar) on either Saturday or Sunday and plan out my meals! Then, I make a shopping list based on what I'm going to make! I spend TONS less at the grocery store by doing this because I don't buy things I "might" use…I only buy the things I know I will need for those meals. It also cuts down on the amount of time I spend in the kitchen! With three kids under the age of 8….and working part time….I need to be as efficient as possible. I'm not kidding….you will notice a huge difference if you just start doing this simple thing.
We write out our menu for the week then shop accordingly,I also go through my coupons ,sometimes that factor in what will be on our menu.We always stock up on sale meat also. That helps for when we may not have as much to spend on groceries in some weeks.
I write a menu and shop for everything I need for two weeks at a shot. By doing this I tend to prevent myself from over-buying stuff I really don't need. Of course, I usually plan to "MAKE TOO MUCH" for dinner a couple nights a week when my neighbor's husband is gone on military duty, because it allows me to invite his wife over to help eat the extras. To simplify my life I add little slips of paper with small cleaning jobs on them into
a bag and the kids get to pick one at a time and they do that chore. They have a great time and they can't wait until their next pick. The house gets clean and we have so much fun.
I even had the kids decorate a plastic box and in it is their own cleaning supplies like a wash cloth, vinegar and water in a spray bottle and a feather duster.
I try to simplify my life by serving easily prepared yet healthy meals. I like to throw some chicken or other meat into the oven and then while it's cooking, I cook some quick rice, throw together a salad or cut up fruit for a fruit salad, and then VOILA!!! Dinner in about 30 minutes!
I also make large meals so there is enough for another meal later in the wk or enough to freeze for later.
We make a shopping list, following what staples we need and what’s on ad.
We plan on buying certain meats and other grocery items at the times when their prices are the lowest, corned beef at St. Patties Day, Turkey at Thanksgiving, etc, and plan multiple meals from one cooking. As an example, we still have some corned beef and cabbage meals in the freezer as well as a turkey, cubed cooked turkey for casseroles and some turkey enchiladas among other things.
I plan our menu for the week (before going grocery shopping). This way I buy less items and impulse and spend less money at drive-thru restaurants.

Everyone has chores assigned to them regarding dinner so everyone knows in advance what is expected of them. In addition, each person(children included) is assigned weekly chores to do. Most often the weekly chores are done during the weekend. I plan the dinner menus for the week at the beginning of the week after checking the fliers to see what is on sale.
